Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and deterioration of bone architecture, leading to an increased risk of fractures. It is the most common metabolic bone disease globally. It is estimated that more than two million Canadians aged 40 years and older have osteoporosis. Approximately 80% of Canadians who have sustained a fracture due to osteoporosis do not receive appropriate care, leaving them at an elevated risk for subsequent fractures, deconditioning, and premature death.1 Many clinical practice guidelines exist on the management of osteoporosis and fracture prevention. Several of them have separate definitions for patients deemed very high and high risk for fracture and, as such, have specific criteria for the use of anabolic and antiresorptive treatments.

Matthew Wong-Pack

Dr. Matthew Wong-Pack is a Rheumatology fellow at McMaster University. He works with the Ontario Best Practices Research Initiative (OBRI), a research organization aimed at improving the treatment and outcomes of Ontarians living with rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthur N. Lau

Dr. Arthur Lau is currently an associate professor in the division of rheumatology at McMaster University, Canada and holds the Actavis Chair in Rheumatology for Better Bone Health. He obtained his medical degree from McMaster University. He also completed his internal medicine and rheumatology training at McMaster University. He then completed the clinical investigator program, concurrently obtaining an MSc in health research methodology through McMaster. He is one of the founding partners of the William G. Bensen Centre for Arthritis Excellence and serves as its medical director. His clinical and research interest focuses on the screening and treatment of osteoporosis, and models of care to improve the screening and treatment of inflammatory arthritis.
